With slavery abolished in the British Empire in 1833 and officially stamped out on the island by 1862, British Honduras was formally declared a British Crown Colony and named thus. As a British colony, British Honduras was given a coat of arms; the coat of arms was used to create a badge that was used to deface the British Blue Ensign to signify the colony’s allegiance. The coat of arms features the logging industry that first led to British settlement there. The figures, tools, and mahogany tree represent this industry. When Belize was granted autonomy within the British Commonwealth in 1981, the coat of arms was used on the flag. There were several additions and modifications that were made to the flag at the time of their independence. While they kept the same royal blue field as the British Blue Ensign, they did away with the Union Jack in the canton. The white disc was added to middle of the flag with the coat of arms that was given to British Honduras. The coat of arms is held by a mestizo and a man of African descent with two red stripes running horizontally along the top and bottom of the flag. The red stripes were to denote the color of the opposition party while the fifty leaves are representative of 1950 when the People’s United Party was formed.
